An internationally oriented region

Internationalisation, trade, foreign relations: the Emilia-Romagna economy is proud of its long tradition of being open to the rest of the world, by being, on one hand, the birthplace of well-known brands that are sold all over the world and, on the other, by attracting the head offices of big foreign multinationals to the region.

For the Region, internationalisation firstly means trade with foreign markets, to be increased also through production agreements and investment abroad. This is why Emilia-Romagna is one of the leading italian regions in terms of its level of exports.

Emilia-Romagna, with 25 thousand exporting companies, is the leading italian region for export value per capita and the third for total exports. The regional production system is highly export-oriented: regional imports total 32.4 billion euro while exports amount to 56.1 billion (Istat-Coeweb, 2016).

Exported goods and services from Emilia-Romagna represent 13.5% of italian exports. A significant figure, considering that the region's companies represent 7.9% of the national total.

Some specific sectors have a high share of exports at national level.

Exports of regional tiles and ceramics are worth more than 94.0% of the national total. Also, about one fourth of italian exports of ‘agricultural machinery’, ‘other general purpose machinery’ and ‘tubes, pipes, hollow profiles and related fittings’ and one fifth of ‘wearing apparel’, come from Emilia-Romagna (2015).

Regional exports of ‘meat and meat-based products’ amount to 38.3% of the national total, while regional exports of ‘motor vehicles’ amount to 17.1% of the national total.

Contact point for foreing investors

Emilia-Romagna is a region open to new foreign investment and passed a specific “regional investment promotion law" (R. Law no. 14) in july 2014 that provides a new tool to attract foreign investors - the ‘settlement and development agreement’.

Businesses will find valuable opportunities and advantages here, enabling them to innovate and grow in a highly specialised economic system with easy access to international markets, a broad ecosystem of suppliers/customers and skilled human resources.

ERVET carries out territorial marketing activities to promote attractiveness and inward internationalization on behalf of the Region of Emilia-Romagna. The agency is the regional contact point for foreign investors and supports investment requests providing tailored information, contacts and assistance.

All activities are free of charge.

Ervet’s mission is focused on investment promotion, cooperation among regions, provinces and municipalities, and, together with economic and social entities, on the realisation of coordinated action to promote the sustainable development and environmental renovation of the region.
