Pennsylvania
The collaborations between the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the Emilia-Romagna Region
General profile of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
Country | United States of America |
State | Pennsylvania |
Governatore | Tom Wolf |
Capoluogo: | Harrisburg |
Pennsylvania, officially the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, is a federated state of the United States of America and one of the four commonwealths of the federation. The capital is Harrisburg. The nickname Keystone State, which has been used since the early 19th century, derives both from the state’s central location (among the 13 colonies that originally formed the United States) and its importance both politically (many important documents, including the Declaration of Independence, were signed in Pennsylvania) and economically (in both industry and agriculture).
Pennsylvania is a leader in many fields, such as:
- Life sciences: it is a national leader in medical and research laboratories, medical devices and pharmaceuticals.
- Technology: technology is supported by a thriving innovation ecosystem.
- Manufacturing: it is based on advanced technical and STEM skills, with key investments connecting training and work in a diverse industry.
- Agribusiness: Pennsylvania’s main economic driver, with an economic impact of $135.7 billion.
- Energy: Pennsylvania is the largest net exporter of electricity in the United States; it is the second largest producer of natural gas and nuclear energy in the United States.
Governor Wolf updated Pennsylvania’s Climate Action Plan and announced that Pennsylvania would join the US Climate Alliance in April 2019.
Pennsylvania is a key partner for the Emilia-Romagna regional ecosystem, particularly in two areas: life sciences and the food industry. Institutional relations with the Government of Pennsylvania have been in place since 2018, leading to the signing of the Cooperation Agreement between the two Regions. Pennsylvania is at the centre of the bio-pharmaceutical corridor in the north-east of the United States and is the leading US state in pharmaceutical manufacturing and in the number of workers employed by the industry.
The Bridging Innovation Program – Gene&Cell Therapy – Pennsylvania 2022, promoted by the Emilia-Romagna Region and ART-ER, is a programme dedicated to regional companies, start-ups and research laboratories that are members of ClustER Health. Through a series of workshops and online meetings, participants were able to meet with representatives, institutions and centres of one of the most important hubs in the world in the field of gene and cell therapies, expanding the relations and exchanges of our ecosystem towards Pennsylvania. The project culminated with a visit in June 2022, which allowed the participating entities (four companies and one research centre) to get in touch with the local innovation ecosystem, participate in several networking events and propose a strategic agenda for future collaborations in the field of advanced therapies between the two regions.
In June 2022, President Stefano Bonaccini and Pennsylvania’s Acting Secretary at the Department of Community and Economic Development Neil Weaver signed the Cooperation Agreement between the Emilia-Romagna Region and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. It is a pact for innovation that opens up new opportunities for Emilia-Romagna’s production and research systems (key sectors: life sciences and pharmaceuticals, as well as advanced manufacturing and agri-food).
