The collaborations between the Federative Republic of Brazil and the Emilia-Romagna Region
General profile of the Federative Republic of Brazil
Country: | Federative Republic of Brazil |
Presidene: | Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva |
Capital: | Brasilia |

Brazil is the largest country in South America in terms of size and population and borders most of the other nations of the continent.
The relations of political cooperation between Italy and Brazil are based on a common heritage of democratic values and on a broad range of activities and contacts maintained both at central government level and between Italian Regions and Provinces on one side, and Brazilian cities and federated states on the other. Furthermore, Brazil is home to one of the largest Italian communities in the world: of the approximately 6.5 million Italians living abroad, more than 700,000 reside in Brazil (around 11% of the total).
The Emilia-Romagna Region has had institutional and technical relations with Brazil since 2004, when it signed the Cooperation Agreement with the Government of the Federative Republic of Brazil. Collaboration has continued with the implementation of international cooperation programmes. Since 2008 the Region has engaged in a series of specific projects to strengthen cooperative movements and the agri-food sector in Brazil, and to promote collaboration in the health sector.
At present, cooperation is focused on supporting actions for the exchange of knowledge and best practices and capacity-building in relation to universal health care and social policies. Initiatives concern areas of common interest, including the development of community-based care and of situated learning for professionals in the respective services.

The Italian-Brazilian Laboratory for Training, Research and Practices in Collective Health is an inter-institutional cooperation between universities and health services of the two countries. It started in 2014 and it is devoted to research, training and cooperation activities between the Emilia-Romagna Region and Brazil. Its main initiatives concern the implementation of exchange and in-depth study visits, seminars and training and capacity-building workshops in the two countries. The ʻUna rosa per Anita’ (A Rose for Anita) project aims to disseminate and enhance the image of Anita, the inseparable companion of General Giuseppe Garibaldi, in Italy and around the world through the creation of a very special and evocative rose hybrid. The owner of this very special rose is the ʻGaribaldi-Da Vinci’ Technical High School of Cesena. As well as spreading to various municipalities in Romagna, the project continues to gain acclaim in South America and other parts of the world through the collaboration of the Instituto Cultural ʻAnita Garibaldi’ of Laguna (Sc-Brazil).
