Sustainable agriculture: food chain approach

Emilia-Romagna Region facilitates network agreements between economic operators in the food chain through: production planning, fair terms of payment, dissemination of good practices and integrated agriculture or sustainable agriculture.

Examples of the food value chain approach:

  • 100% of the processed tomato from northern Italy is subject to an agreement that all production is integrated and a small amount is organic;
  • 2/3 of the Emilia-Romagna potatoes are subject to an agreement establishing the application of all sustainable IP standards;
  • 1/3 of durum wheat from Emilia-Romagna should apply, according to the agreement, all sustainable IP standards.

Sustainable agriculture: producers organization (PO)

A significant part of the Rural development program for 2014-2020 is intended for the financing of integrated projects of the food value chain (Filiere approach)

  • 21 PO in 2016, with € 500 million in turnover
  • 13 vegetable products, € 227 million of turnover and 23,000 farms
  • 8 animal products, € 152 million of turnover and 721 farms
  • 5 IP (Processed tomato, pork, pear, eggs) working in several regions.
