An internationally oriented region

Internationalisation, trade, foreign relations: the economy of Emilia-Romagna is proud of its long tradition of being open to the rest of the world, by being on the one hand, the birthplace of well-known brands sold all over the world and on the other, by attracting the head offices of large foreign multinationals to the region.

For the region, internationalisation primarily means trade with foreign markets, to also be promoted through production agreements and investment abroad. This is why Emilia-Romagna is one of the leading Italian regions in terms of the level of exports.

With 25,000 exporting companies, Emilia-Romagna is the top Italian region for per capita export value and the third for total exports. The regional production system is highly export-oriented: regional imports total 32.4 billion euro, while exports amount to 56.1 billion euro (source: Istat-Coeweb, 2016).

Exported goods and services from Emilia-Romagna represent 13.5% of total Italian exports; a significant figure, considering the region's companies represent only 7.9% of the national total.

Certain sectors have a large share of exports on a national level.

Exports of the region’s tiles and ceramics amount to more than 94% of the Italian total and about a quarter of Italian exports of “agricultural machinery”, “other general-purpose machinery” and “tubes, pipes, hollow profiles and related fittings” and a fifth of “clothing apparel” are also from Emilia-Romagna (2015).

Regional exports of “meat and meat-based products” amount to 38.3% of the national total, while regional exports of “motor vehicles” amount to 17.1%.
